GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
Credit Information
Successful completion of any semester at WHS will result in a half (0.5) or one (1) credit earned for each class. Each credit will count in one or more subject areas based on the class's curriculum. Each year students are required to enroll in at least 6 credits, with reduced schedule options being available for students participating in Accelerated Pathways or Worksite Learning opportunities. Credit requirements to graduate are changing with the class of 2027 and beyond, so please check with your counselor to make sure you are on track to graduate. See the above credit check charts for details.
Class of 2026: 26 credits required to graduate
Class of 2027+: 24 credits required to graduate
Credit Recovery
Students who fail a core curriculum class (such as English, Math, or Science), or otherwise fall behind on required credits, must make a plan with their counselor to make up for the lost credit. Students can make up credits during the normal school day by:
- Taking a 0-period class
- Signing up for a class with practicum (such as Sports Medicine or other CTE course)
- Signing up for Worksite Learning, which allows students to earn school credit while at work
- Taking a WVTSC summer course
Credit Retrieval
Students who are unable to successfully complete all their coursework should work with their counselors to develop individualized plans to recover credits and earn their diplomas. Students can do make-up credit courses through our online credit retrieval program after school starting their junior year. Speak with your counselor to get started.
High School & Beyond Plan
To graduate from high school in Washington state, all students must develop a High School & Beyond Plan (HSBP) that details (1) how they will meet high school grad requirements and (2) what they will do following high school. WHS uses SchooLinks to help students formulate and maintain their HSBP.
WHS offers several career exploration opportunities! Check out our career exploration opportunities & job shadows in the Pathways Center, the College & Career Mentor Program, the annual College & Career Fair, the optional ASVAB exam, and more.
- 8th grade: Identify a Personal Pathway/Career Cluster by exploring local businesses and completing an online career assessment in SchooLinks
- 9th grade: Develop a flexible "four year plan" informed by the identified career cluster
- 10th grade: Update online career assessment and explore related careers
- 11th grade: Plan future coursework based on your pathway. Develop and submit a resume
- 12th grade: Meet with your counselor to discuss after high school plans
Washington State History
Most students who are enrolled in a Washington State school during their 7th or 8th grade years will take Washington State History as part of their middle school courses. Students who do not complete the course during middle school or transfer from a school outside of the state will have the opportunity to complete the course online.
